Here in Vegas we have many oppressive laws against the homeless;
keeping them out of sight of the tourists is a major concern for the
1%. For instance, you can be kicked off the bus for sleeping, or for
"appearing homeless" (this vague definition was provided by a
driver). As a result, many of the homeless and poverty-stricken
don't even try getting on the buses. They know they'll be messed with.
So our idea is to rent an 18-seater and run our own FREE BUS LINE up
and down one of the major thoroughfares in town, picking up anyone
who needs a ride and serving them food & water while taking them
where they need to go. There will be brief teach-ins, printed
propaganda for them to read, lively discussions, and we're hoping to
get an ATU driver onboard to talk about the union's issues as
well. The idea is to give our passengers the most interesting and
enjoyable bus ride of their lives, while educating them on Occupy and
Transit issues.
Just thought I'd toss this idea onto the table, in case other cities
want to do something similar.
